2023 Ford Mustang The next 2023 Ford Mustang was spotted in a prototype. This alternative to the likes of the Toyota Supra, Jaguar F-Type, BMW M4 and Mercedes-AMG C63 may be about to lose its distinctive rear-wheel drive design in favor of an all-wheel drive system when it lasts for sale around 2023.

The prototype car in these photos comes with the same body as the current Ford Mustang because this specific test vehicle is being used to evaluate the mechanical components of the next Mustang. When the new vehicle is revealed, it could be inspired by the recently launched electric car Mustang Mach-E.

The new Mustang will probably maintain its vintage two-door coupe look, but there’s a strong chance its large grille could give way to something a lot more elegant and modern. There will still be some form of petrol engine under the hood so it won’t shift to a full grid quite like the Mach-E (shown above), but you can bet it will look very different from today’s car.

Ford plans to launch approximately 18 hybrid cars by 2022, and there is a strong chance that the next Mustang will come with a hybrid V8. A patent filed by Ford in 2017 showed a hybrid that featured a V8 that drives the rear wheels and a pair of electric motors — one to drive both the front wheels. This setup may debut in a new Mustang replacement.

Such a setup would not only make the new car the first-ever Ford Mustang plug-in hybrid, but it would also make it the first four-wheel-drive Mustang since the car was introduced in 1964. The move will reflect the latest BMW M3 and M4 models available for the first time with the xDrive all-wheel drive system from BMW.

However, like those cars, there is a strong chance that the new Ford Mustang will also be available with a simpler, non-hybrid V8 setup with only rear-wheel drive. Although there is no guarantee that such a model can pass the latest (and most stringent) Euro 6d emission rules, which could mean that this version is not available in Europe and the UK.

Ford may also decide to develop a replacement for the current 2.3-liter four-cylinder Ecoboost Mustang, which could see the addition of a hybrid drive system to help boost fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions.

The new Ford Mustang is not expected until 2022 at the earliest, and it will likely be in 2023 before you can enter a dealership and purchase one.

However, adding hybrid technology to the new Mustang will make the new car more expensive than the previous model. Four-cylinder hybrid Mustangs could set you back around £ 40,000, while V8 models would cost nearly £ 50,000.
